Partnerships
& Engagement
For many successful companies, engagement with stakeholders - those that influence, or are influenced by the organisation - is becoming central to their business sustainability strategy. Companies such as Shell and Monsanto have learnt the hard way that you ignore your stakeholders at your peril. Telling people what you are doing is no longer enough - listening to their concerns is important too. This dialogue enables businesses to understand society's expectations, and provides an advanced warning system for issues that are bubbling up. For some businesses - including Shell - engagement has now gone beyond dialogue to where stakeholders are involved in making decisions about future company policy and direction.
By engaging, organisations are undertaking both a risk management and a business development activity, specifically:
| |
Gaining advance warning of potential risks |
| |
Identifying
unseen opportunities such as new products, markets and partnerships. |
| |
Ensuring
a licence to operate, developing strong relationships that
will help retain trust when difficulties arise and build brand
value |
| |
Balancing the needs and expectations of all stakeholders and learning from the different perspectives they bring.
|
| |
Connecting with
and supporting the communities in which they operate and in
which their employees live. |
By engaging with stakeholders and developing more trusting relationships, organisations may begin to develop partnerships which help both them and their partners drive sustainable development improvements. Partnerships can help companies by providing better and more innovative solutions to problems than would be achieved by working independently, or by paying a contractor to provide a solution.
The idea of partnerships is simple, but organisations don’t always find them easy to realise. Sd3 can advise organisations on developing and strengthening their relationships with their stakeholders through partnerships and engagement. Sd3 can identify, make the case for and help develop partnerships that improve performance, develop new markets, eliminate a problem, or promote an issue that the organisation supports. Being familiar with a wide range of potential partners, speaking the languages of sustainability and business, and understanding the sustainability challenges faced by the organisation brings real benefits.
